Why Chris?

Returning Integrity to Our Schools

I’m Chris Meek and I am running for the New Hanover County Board of Education. Helping students and educators realize their potential and attain success has been my passion as an educator for over 20 years. As a member of The North Carolina Association of Educators, North Carolina’s largest and most influential professional association for educators, I have held many leadership positions including Vice President of New Hanover County Association of Educators, President of Onslow County Association of Educators and being elected to represent Region 7B on the NCAE Board of Directors. As a member of the Finance and Personnel Committee some of my responsibilities included making personnel decisions and passing a budget that accomplished the goals of the organization. As part of the Government Relations Committee I helped set the legislative agenda and worked with legislators, although we may not have always shared the same views, we worked to achieve the same goals to improve public education. I vigorously approach issues that directly impact students and educators and am often a voice of reason mediating differing positions in discussions on policy and programs.

It is my firm belief that, as they mature, students are responsible for their learning and educators are the facilitators of that learning. Educators use state standards and the curriculum as a guide to teach our students to become critical thinkers and productive citizens in our community. By creating well educated, independent thinking, productive adults, our community thrives as potential employers choose New Hanover County to locate their businesses. I have made this the core of my philosophy of education and have successfully employed it in my classroom.

The last two years has revealed the ineptitude of the current incumbents whose seats are up in this election and those who came before them. Just as North Carolina has fallen from being the beacon of educational excellence in the Southeast, the recent revelations have led to New Hanover County Schools to fall with it. Scandals and the threats to student safety and welfare have shown the lack of leadership that has been at the helm of New Hanover County Schools for over 30 years.

It’s time for a change.

With my leadership experience, education and dedication to our students, staff and community, I want to restore the integrity that New Hanover County Schools deserves. That is why I am running for a seat on the New Hanover County Board of Education. Please take the time to get to know me, my ideas, and more importantly, feel free to share yours. Together we can return integrity to New Hanover County Schools.
